Gino Severini, the Sitwells and Montegufoni
Another case of the English thinking big in Tuscany! The property this time the medieval castle of Montegufoni, just south of Florence, the purchasers the eccentric, aristocratic Sitwells, who commissioned Gino Severini to help with the decorations. A moment then to examine the links between this esoteric, Tuscan-born, Paris-based artist and the avant-garde movements in England, Italy and France both before and after WWI.
A moment, too, in which to pick up the signals denoting differences between the visual and political cultures of Britain and continental Europe a century ago.
