English in Italy: the redoubtable Janet Ross
An energetic, entrepreneurial Victorian transplanted to Italy. From an ambience frequented by eminent figures like Carlyle and Dickens, to horse-racing with Bedouins across the desert sands, and then doyenne of a medieval castle above Florence. For over half a century Janet was a leading light in the Anglo-Florentine community, socializer and facilitator, her many writings popularizing the people, food, customs and husbandry.
