Seminar: L’amore che non osa

Lord Alfred Douglas is most widely known for his much flaunted relationship with Oscar Wilde, which notoriously led to the latter’s trial and imprisonment. Douglas tends, in fact, to be cast into the role of Wilde’s literary muse, evil genius and restless lover, who pales into insignificance after Wilde’s death. Yet, apart from all his persistent quarrel-picking, provocations and trials, Douglas was a poet in his own right, and not only in the terms of “the love that dares not speak its name”. This seminar presents the first Italian translation of his poetry and discusses the problems inherent in the transposition.
