Aptis ESOL is an innovative multilevel English language qualification designed and developed by British Council language testing experts and underpinned by the latest research in assessment methodology.

Aptis ESOL assesses your language proficiency in all four English skills; speaking, listening, reading and writing, at all levels from A1 to C2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).  

Aptis ESOL is available in the following variants: 

Aptis ESOL General a general English proficiency test for assessing levels from A1 to C on the CEFR. 
Aptis ESOL Advanced a variant of Aptis ESOL which tests language proficiency from B1 to C2 on the CEFR. Tasks are more complex and designed to distinguish between C1 and C2 level candidates. 
Aptis ESOL for Teachers a variant of Aptis ESOL adapted for the educational context. The test content relates to teachers and the scenarios they come across every day.  It has the same format as Aptis ESOL General and tests levels from A1 to C on the CEFR.

Which Aptis ESOL variant to choose?

If you need to certify your English level at B2 or below, we recommend that you take Aptis ESOL General.

If you need to prove your proficiency at C1 or C2 level, we recommend that you take Aptis ESOL Advanced. 

If you are a teacher, you may want to certify your level by taking Aptis ESOL for Teachers.

Before applying to any university, institution or programme that requires an English-level certificate, please check with the relevant institution that Aptis ESOL is among the accepted certifications for that effect.

Aptis ESOL Regulation

Aptis ESOL is regulated by the United Kingdom Government’s Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), which regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England.
