“No Man’s an Island”… but a Woman is! Isolation and Creativity in Virginia Woolf, Jeanette Winterson and Sandra Cisneros
The seminar introduces the notions of isolation and creativity and their fundamental ambiguity with Woolf's arguments in her celebrated “A Room of One's Own". For, while isolation in the shape of their own homes gives women the freedom and time to create, it also brings marginality and discrimination. This dichotomy will be discussed in a dialogue with two contemporary female writers, Winterson and Cisneros, and their struggles to come to terms with what it means to be a woman and an artist.
