Language in pop!
This seminar aims to look at different styles of lyrics in British pop music over the decades, from the simple to the surreal, the clichéd to the erudite. Lyrics tell us a lot about the way language is used and the culture of the time, from the experimental approaches of David Bowie in the 1960s to the abstract lyrics of bands like Coldplay. How does pop music reflect society? Why does pop reference itself? What subjects get covered and how do they interact with the music?
