Folk tales and fairy tales today: Italo Calvino and Helen Oyeyemi
For Italo Calvino, folk tales and fairy tales are "mysterious stories of transformation” offering unexpected insights into human destinies. Transformation is also a key motif in British author Helen Oyeyemi’s highly entertaining tales, which attentively question social and racial tropes and their assumptions. Martha Cooley will introduce and explore, always in the context of Calvino’s ideas, Oyeyemi’s novel Boy, Snow, Bird and her way of zigzagging across the border between reality and fantasy.
